Krister and his fiancé Brita return to Stockholm after a stay in Italy. Shortly upon their return Krister learns that all his assets left to him by his father has disappeared. Together with Brita he tries to obtain justice in an aristocratic and corrupt legal system.

In the year 1756, Fort William Henry on Lake George is under siege by the French and Hurons under General Montcalm. Alice and Cora Munro, young daughters of the British Commander, Colonel Munro, set out from Albany to join their father at the fort. They are accompanied by Major Duncan Heyward, who has loved Alice for a long time, and by a renegade Huron named Magua. He leads them astray with the view of betraying them into the hands of a wandering party of Hurons, but his plans are foiled by Hawkeye, a Colonial scout, when he and his comrades, Chingachgook and his son Uncas, rescue the party and conduct them safely to the fort. Shortly after wards, Munro surrenders on honorable terms to Montcalm and is permitted to march out of the fort under arms and colors. He is then mortally wounded by Magua during a massacre by the Indians as the fort is being evacuated. Cora and Alice are carried off by Magua and Heyward, aided by Hawkeye, Chingachgook and Uncas, sets out in search of them.

Duane Hopkins’ long-anticipated follow up to his 2008 debut Better Things proves well worth the wait. This is British social melodrama made uniquely personal through the prism of Hopkins’ ravishing photographic eye (here collaborating with DoP David Proctor) – its fractured, poetic narrative the perfect form for the story it delivers. Told simply, Bypass documents the breaking point in the life of Tim, a young man too physically weedy and soft-hearted to cope with the extreme demands of his life on a council estate, with a terminally ill single mother, an absent father and brother, and a wayward younger sister to care for. As Tim’s health declines and a net of troubles close around him, Hopkins’ film becomes peopled with phantoms and shadows. George MacKay is exceptional as the haunted, hunted Tim (almost unrecognisable from his muscular role in Paul Wright’s For Those in Peril).
