Andrea De Ritter, founder of an organization that supports gifted children, is murdered after making a presentation to Zoe Suskin, only fifteen but an Oxford student. That night Andrea had resisted the advances of young student Elmo Woodeson as well as sending a copy of the autobiography of former spy mistress Dame Grace Orde to Zoe's publisher father Leon. She had added inside the book "Who Killed Mary? See Chapter 8." Both Leon and Elmo are killed shortly after and Zoe's tutor Donald Voss is poisoned though not fatally. Suskin had punched Liam Cullen, Andrea's lover, wrongly believing he was having an affair with his wife Judith following a text message to her and indeed sexual affairs, with Andrea at their hub, would seem to motivate the killings.

The heart is no longer burning ?Moodysson (Lilya 4-Ever) blowtorched it to oblivion. An irreparable relationship between a father, an amateur pornographer, and his introverted son starts the film, followed by the entrance of a haunted macho man and a budding adult actress. From here, it regresses to graphic sex, drugs and beyond as each display their cruelty via scenes of gynaecological surgeries, uncensored rape and utter humiliation. This raw, angst-filled indictment of the decline of Western civilization takes the themes in his previous films to the extreme, mocking a world where reality TV, greed and violence have utterly destroyed the foundation of all our relationships.

It does a reasonably good job of situating the drama in 5th century Roman Africa, even though the external sets are obviously contemporary (to Rossellini) Roman remains. The interiors are well done and convincing. The drama is dramatic when it needs to be, though there are some lengthy theological discussions, and one does get a sense of the power of St. Augustine's preaching, of the theological disputes of the time and of the tasks of a bishop. The scenes from his life, though limited till his later life, are well chosen to illustrate his character and accomplishments.
