The Cynic, The Rat and The Fist clearly takes influence regarding it's central theme from the Sergio Leone masterpiece 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly', and here we follow the fortunes of three strong male characters as their lives intertwine in the name of crime. Director Umberto Lenzi plied his trade in a number of Italy's most popular genres, and his resume includes the likes of zombies, cannibals and Giallo; but the only field he's a master in is the Dirty Harry inspired sub-genre, 'Polizia'. This is only my third Lenzi crime flick, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that it's one of the best he ever made, as the masterpiece 'Almost Human' only just edges it out. Umberto Lenzi packs his film with all the things you'd expect from the crime genre; with things such as shootouts, car chases and sadism featuring strongly. The actual plot is a little convoluted, and follows Italian mob boss 'The Chinaman', as he hooks up with New York crime lord Frank Di Maggio. The cop looking to take the pair of them down is Leonardo Tanzi, a man not afraid to break the law in order to bring in his man.

Based on a widely-acclaimed TV series by Luc Dionne himself, Omertà-The Movie is centered around the character of Pierre Gauthier, a cop specialized in organized crime. He's now the head of Pulsar International, a high-level private security agency. One day, he's called by Gilbert Tanguay, his former boss, to investigate on a conspiracy. Tanguay recruits Sophie, a former agent of the Canadian secret service, to infiltrate the Montreal underworld. Sophie must earn the trust of Sam Cohen and Steve Bélanger, two known associates of the Montreal Italian mafia. Both men are planning an ambitious heist involving the gold of all North-American central banks.

Settled comfortably in Sweden with his wife and two children, Siavash finds himself at middle age consumed with guilt for having abandoned his parents when he left Iran many years before. A hasty attempt to return finds Siavash stranded in the free port of Qeshm, a sort of island no-man's-land and departure point for smugglers, where the locals are as puzzled by this backwards-fleeing refugee as he is by their unfamiliar customs. Director Vahid Mousaian's second feature is an accomplished mix of allegory, understated drama and absurdist comedy filmed in a muted, detailed palate in the style of Iranian masters such as Kiarostami. Awarded Best Music (Asia-Pacific Film Festival) and Best Feature (Dubrovnik International Film Festival), and recipient of a Jury Prize at the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival, this tale of a worldly Iranian out of step among his more traditional countrymen illustrates the poignancy of the expatriate's condition. Although making use of specific locations, the film also has a broader resonance as a poetic reflection on life in exile.
