Johnny Victor is in love with an international businessman, Louis Galt, who is actually the head of a syndicate that mints illegal coins for the Continental market. But she soon learns that Galt has been deceiving her and has no intentions of divorcing his wife. So she meets Pierre Clemont, a potter, and falls for him (onscreen and off). Into this little slice of life comes Emil Landosh, a confidence man, and he steals a bracelet that Galt had given Victor and uses it to pay a debt. Enter a twist-of-fate (the US title that describes the film a lot better than the UK title, which is not unusual for films going from America to England but seldom vice-versa), and it ends up in Galt's hands. Strained credibility aside since many, many films depend on beating the coincidental odds, Galt assumes that Landosh is Victor's lover, and this isn't a good assumption on his part since Landosh kills him and then makes it appear as if Victor and Clermont did the deed.

Lal Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) lives with his mother (Nirupa Roy) in a small basti in Bombay, grows up with the poor and needy. He is called Lal Badshah by the people he lives among. Meanwhile, Lal meets Kiran (Manisha Koirala), an L.I.C. agent who falls in love with him & is determined to become his wife. At the castle, Dayal Singh is still hunting for the treasures of the Maharaja, whom he murdered years ago along with his brother Sultan Singh (Prem Chopra). He has concluded that Claire Trent is severely disturbed and needs to be put away. Dermot is quite in love with the woman and threatens his uncle within hearing distance of Sir Alington's manservant. The police find the murder weapon in Dermot's home but he sets off into the fog-bound night to find his uncle's killer.
