Debu, a struggling songwriter, has been dumped by his lover and left out on the streets. Juhi, an aging streetwalker, finds it difficult to pick up customers. Kaku, her twelve years old son, saddled to a wheelchair, is yearning for love and care. One rainy night Debu and Juhi run into each other. Debu, desperate for a roof over his head, convinces Juhi to take him on as a babysitter for her disabled child. However, Juhi begins to feel left out as the bond between her son and the outsider cements . . . a bond she could never build, with her own child. The film journeys through tender and dramatic moments as the three characters strive to reach out and connect. Debu wants Juhi to give up being a prostitute and tries transforming her into an elegant, dignified woman. Juhi begins to look at Debu with new eyes . . . Can he possibly be a man in her life? Can the three of them be a family?

Film noir and hard-boiled love story shot in black & white and on video, with wonderful camerawork, montage and casting about the hard female cop Miki who makes a minor error and then has to clean up the tracks. With a cameo role by director Tsukamoto Shinya. Nagasaki could easily have taken the Miike route in the 1990s, churning out four or five direct-to-video features a year and trying to give them some 'edge', but he chose instead to look for ways to move his own agenda forward. This `hard-boiled love story' (co-written by Nakajima Goro, his collaborator on The Enchantment) was his first digitally-shot feature, and it's a flawless combination of motifs from vintage film noir with the theme first explored in The Drive: a tough woman dragging a weaker man deeper and deeper into crime. Woman cop Miki is chasing a wanted man when she stumbles on a crashed car and sees the driver, Koichi, ignite spilled petrol to kill himself and his passenger. She drags Koichi to safety, but the passenger dies. Miki says nothing to challenge the inquest finding of `accidental death', and when she visits Koichi in hospital he begins to understand that her complicity in his crime implies a sexual invitation. But a gumshoe (played by novelist Hosaka Kazushi) has photos of the crash, and the only way to stall his blackmail is to kill him, the first of several murders... Did I mention that it's shot in lustrous black-and-white? (Tony Rains)

During a thunderstorm, John Channing, (Milton Parsons), a dark-eyed maniac, escapes from an asylum after a ten year incarceration and makes his way under the cover of darkness to the Channing estate. There he meets his sister Larinda Channing who was responsible for his escape so that he can help her in a plan to test the greed of her money-grubbing relatives who she has invited to the mansion for the weekend. With obvious glee John poses as Martin the butler when the relatives are told that Larinda has died and that her secretary Mary Wingfield is the sole heir to the estate. With his eyes rolling, the butler exclaims "I do like sharp edges, there's nothing more fascinating than a scalpel. It cuts...so quickly, so silently, so deeply...which reminds me. I'm going to be a surgeon..."
