Society-woman Hattie Leonard organizes her own band of 'gang-busters' when she discovers a garment she sent to the dry-cleaners had been taxed twenty-five-cents to pay for gang 'protection.' She sends to New York City for a reformed gangster she had befriended, Frankie O'Fallon, and he hires the manpower needed from the usual Columbia hoods. Her gang hi-jacks the racketeers, recovers the merchant's money and returns it to them. Lila Thorne, engaged to Hattie' son, Fred, throws in with her future mother-in-law when she sees the old lady is fighting for the American principle of freedom of choice...and action. Lila frames the gang-leader, George Watson, and Hattie's big-city vigilantes kidnap him, and extract the information that the town-mayor, Johnny "J.J." Jones, is the brains behind the protection-gang and is getting the big cut of the money. But Hattie still has to rob a bank before she can secure the evidence needed to convict the mayor. All in a day's work for a crusading society dame.

Eventually Jenny and Sister Philomena get through to her and help her improve her life. Jenny is perplexed that Mrs Jenkins mistakes her for somebody called Rosie and uncovers a tragic set of events in the old lady's life before closure is achieved. Rehearsing for the local nativity play its director Chummy seeks the help of intelligent school leaver Lynette Duncan,unaware that the girl is heavily pregnant,ultimately giving birth but leaving the baby at the convent door. Chummy unites mother and child but the play seems doomed when its costumes are destroyed when a water pipe bursts. Fortunately the locals rally round to ensure that the show goes ahead.

Charlie and his little brother Simon live a secluded life, feeding off of the land and surviving on their own. The monotony of their lives remains unchanged: day after day, month after month, yet, something keeps them from growing comfortable, from feeling safe. And all too soon, the nightmare brewing beneath the surface of their quiet farm life will erupt. For how can one survive the end of the world and expect their future to be bright? How can one expect there to be a future at all?
